What’s On This Fall?

Smart Moves: Chess Club (ages 9 - 12)

Discover the exciting world of chess in this fun and welcoming beginner program for children ages 9–12! Designed for participants with little to no prior chess experience, this 13-week course introduces the fundamentals of the game, including how the pieces move, basic rules and strategies, checkmate patterns, and good sportsmanship. Through engaging lessons, interactive activities, and guided practice games, participants will build confidence while developing critical thinking, problem-solving, concentration, and decision-making skills.

Each class combines instruction, hands-on learning, and opportunities to play with classmates in a supportive environment. As the program progresses, participants will learn new concepts, practice their skills, and gain experience applying strategies during games. The season will conclude with a friendly tournament where players can showcase what they have learned, celebrate their progress, and enjoy the excitement of competition with family and friends invited to spectate. No previous chess knowledge is required—just curiosity and a willingness to learn
