The History Behind Today’s Headlines

A timely conversation about Israel, history, and the events shaping our world.

The war that created the State of Israel in 1948 remains one of the most consequential and debated events of the modern Middle East.

More than 75 years later, its history continues to shape the conversations, disagreements and headlines we see every day.

What really happened in 1948?

What myths have taken hold?

And how can understanding the history help us better understand the realities we are confronting today?

Join us tomorrow night for an important and timely evening with Professor Jeffrey Herf, one of North America’s leading historians of modern European and Middle Eastern history.

A Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland, Professor Herf brings decades of historical scholarship and expertise to this conversation. His presentation will examine the aftermath of the Second World War and the Holocaust, the international and local dimensions of the 1948 war, and the resulting refugee crises experienced by both Arabs and Jews.

He will also explore how terms including racism, Antisemitism, and Islamism were understood in their historical context, and why the language we use to discuss this period still matters today.

This is more than a history lesson. It is an opportunity to engage with the past, challenge assumptions and gain a deeper understanding of the issues that continue to shape our world.

There is no cost to attend. Register below and join us for this important conversation.
