Get Ready For Sensational Jazz Vocals with Caribbean Flair

This season of the Izzy Asper Jazz Performances has taken us to the swinging clubs of New York with Benny Benack III, and then across the ocean for a celebration of Moroccan and the very roots of jazz with the African Rhythms Alumni Ensemble.

Now, coming up in March, keep your jazz passport handy, as Cyrille Aimée takes the stage at the Berney Theatre.

WORLDLY INFLUENCES, INTIMATE SOUND

Cyrille Aimée was raised around music and dance in Samois-sur-Seine, France. As she grew, she was captivated by the sounds of Romani jazz prevalent in the area, as well as the Afro-Caribbean rhythms of the bachata and merengue from her mother’s native Dominican Republic.

On her latest album, À Fleur de Peau (which translates to ‘Hypersensitive’), Aimée dips into those Romani-influenced rhythms and then shifts smoothly into a track inspired by her voyage through the jungles of Costa Rica.

Aimée’s style of jazz is full of buoyant grooves and melodies, compelling world music rhythms, with just a hint of pop flavour, tied together by her incredible voice, honed to perfection on the stages of Manhattan jazz clubs.

This is a show you’ll have to hear to believe.

HONOURING IZZY ASPER’S VISION

Now in its 26th season, the Izzy Asper Jazz Performances remain one of Winnipeg’s most beloved arts traditions.

It was Izzy Asper’s dream to make world-class jazz accessible to his city and to bring the best artists from across the globe to a Winnipeg stage, igniting the same passion for jazz that inspired him.

Through the continued generosity and vision of The Asper Foundation, that dream not only endures but grows. In May 2025, The Asper Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to a vibrant, inclusive, and thriving cultural landscape in Winnipeg by increasing funding to Rady JCC’s arts and cultural programming through their newly developed Asper Cultural Enrichment Initiative, including the Izzy Asper Jazz Performances.
