“Magic” Set to Happen at Annual Sports Dinner
Winnipeg, MB –The Rady Jewish Community Centre is excited to announce respected entrepreneur, community activist and Pro Basketball Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson as its keynote speaker for the 42nd Annual Rady JCC Sports Dinner on June 19, 2014 at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg.
“Magic Johnson has a powerful story to tell, not only one of incredible success in the NBA, but also one of surviving HIV and succeeding in life after sport as well,” says Gayle Waxman, Rady JCC Executive Director. “He is one of the biggest names of this generation and is sure to be a draw for sports fans and beyond.”
Magic Johnson earned five NBA championship rings, led the Los Angeles Lakers to nine appearances in the NBA finals and was a member of the original Dream Team, winning a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. During his career, Johnson won three MVP awards and played in twelve NBA All-Star Games.
Although Johnson is best known for his 13-year career in the NBA, he redefined himself as a businessman after retirement, focusing his efforts on revitalizing neglected communities. Magic Johnson Enterprises (MJE) provides high quality products and services that focus primarily on ethnically diverse and underserved urban communities through strategic alliances, investments, consulting and endorsements. He also founded the Magic Johnson Foundation (MJF), where his unwavering commitment to transform Urban America continues through HIV/AIDS Awareness & Prevention Programs, Community Empowerment Centers, and the Taylor Michaels Scholarship Program. Celebrating over 20 years of success, the Magic Johnson Foundation has become one of the most recognizable philanthropic organizations around the world.
“Johnson’s involvement in community outreach makes him an ideal speaker,” says Blair Worb, Sports Dinner Chair. “He embodies the core values of the Rady JCC on and off the court, and is a shining example of what notoriety and hard work can accomplish when combined.”
The Annual Sports Dinner consistently sells out year after year. Guests are treated to a four-course gala dinner, silent, live and rainbow auctions, sports celebrity keynote presentation and much more. The event raises funds to support programming at the Rady JCC, notably scholarships and subsidies for families and individuals in need.
